Curtains are one of those details that can completely change how a room feels.


Hang them too low or too narrow and they can actually make your windows feel smaller. Here’s my go-to curtain formula:


• Hang the rod 4–6 inches above the window frame

• Extend the rod 6–12 inches beyond each side of the window

• Aim for curtain panels totaling about 2× the width of the window

• Let your curtains just kiss the floor or have about a ½-inch break


These small adjustments help your windows look larger, your ceilings feel taller, and your entire room feel more finished.
