What to Splurge On vs. Save On During a Remodel

Remodeling a home comes with a lot of decisions, and one of the biggest is deciding where your money will make the most impact.

Not every item needs to be top-of-the-line, but there are certain areas where spending a little more can completely change how your home looks, feels, and functions.

As an interior designer, I always encourage clients to invest in the pieces that are difficult or expensive to replace later and save on the items that can easily be updated over time.

SPLURGE: Cabinetry

Cabinetry is one area where quality matters.

Good cabinets affect both the appearance and function of your kitchen, bathroom, laundry room, or built-ins. Think about the things you use every single day: drawers, hinges, storage, organization, and finishes.

If your budget allows, prioritize:

• Quality cabinet construction

• Soft-close drawers and doors

• Functional storage solutions

• Full-extension drawers

• Cabinetry that fits the scale of the room

And whenever the space allows, I love cabinetry that feels intentionally designed for the ceiling height rather than leaving an awkward gap above.

SAVE: Decorative Hardware

Hardware can completely change the look of cabinetry, but you don’t necessarily need to spend a fortune on every knob and pull.

There are so many beautiful, affordable options available now.

Choose something that feels substantial, coordinates with your other finishes, and fits the scale of your cabinetry. Hardware is also much easier to replace later if you decide you want a different look.

SPLURGE: Countertops

Countertops are another permanent element that I recommend choosing carefully.

Rather than selecting something simply because it’s trendy, look for a surface that works with the overall palette of your home and is something you’ll still love years from now.

For many of my projects, I gravitate toward warm whites, creamy neutrals, subtle veining, and timeless patterns that complement cabinetry instead of overpowering it.

SAVE: Trendy Accent Pieces

This is where you can have fun.

Pillows, artwork, small accessories, decorative objects, and even some accent furniture are great places to experiment with trends without committing to them permanently.

If you love a certain color or pattern that’s popular right now, bring it into the room through pieces that are easy to swap later.

Your expensive, permanent selections don’t need to carry every trend.

SPLURGE: Lighting

Lighting is one of the easiest ways to make a home feel more custom.

A beautiful chandelier, properly scaled pendants, sconces, or statement fixtures can completely transform a space.

Scale matters just as much as style. One of the most common mistakes I see is choosing a fixture that’s simply too small for the room.

I would rather see fewer thoughtfully chosen fixtures than several inexpensive ones that don’t fit the space properly.

SAVE: Some Secondary Lighting

Not every fixture needs to be the star.

Closets, hallways, utility spaces, and secondary bedrooms are often good places to choose simpler fixtures so you can allocate more of your budget toward the lighting that will make the biggest visual impact.

SPLURGE: Flooring

Flooring covers a huge portion of your home, so it has a major impact on the overall design.

It’s also something you don’t want to replace again in a few years.

Choose flooring based on your lifestyle, durability needs, maintenance expectations, and the overall feeling you want throughout your home.

This is one area where I recommend thinking long-term rather than simply choosing the least expensive option.

SAVE: Rugs

I love a beautiful rug, but not every room needs an investment-level rug.

Rugs take a lot of wear, especially in homes with kids, pets, or high-traffic spaces. There are plenty of affordable options that can still add warmth, texture, and pattern.

Because they’re relatively easy to replace, rugs are also a great way to refresh a room without remodeling.

SPLURGE: The Layout

This might be the most important one.

Before spending money on finishes, make sure the layout actually works.

A beautiful kitchen with poor flow is still a poorly designed kitchen.

Think about:

• Walkways

• Storage

• Appliance locations

• Furniture placement

• Door swings

• Lighting locations

• How you actually move through the space every day

Good design isn’t only about making something pretty. It should make your home function better, too.

SAVE: Items You Know You’ll Change

If you already know you’ll eventually replace something, don’t overspend on it now.

This could include temporary furniture, children’s bedroom pieces, seasonal décor, or accessories you’re using while you slowly complete a room.

Spend intentionally instead of trying to make every single purchase an investment piece.

The Bottom Line

A successful remodel isn’t about spending the most money.

It’s about knowing where to spend it.

Invest in the permanent elements, function, quality, and pieces that are difficult to change later. Save on the decorative layers that allow your home to evolve over time.

Most importantly, make your decisions as part of an overall plan rather than choosing each item individually.
